9-10 March 2022 | Rotorua, New Zealand

We have the potential to transform the forestry sector into a provider of biofuels, bioenergy and a range of renewable bioproducts. This event will help forest owners and managers, harvesting contractors, sawmills and wood manufacturing companies better understand the real value of wood residues and the opportunities in supplying this growing market.

Residues to Revenues 2022

The Issue

There is growing demand for alternatives to fossil fuels. Pressure is being bought to bear by the NZ Government. It’s aiming for low emissions transport. All Government owned facility heating will be from low emissions energy by 2035, with fossil fuels replaced by electricity and solid biofuels. Heat and energy users throughout New Zealand are following the Government’s lead and transitioning from fossil fuels.

Major investment is required in creating a New Zealand biofuels industry. Te Uru Rākau, as part of the Forestry and Wood Processing Industry Transformation Plan, is developing business cases for companies to invest in biofuels and the solid fuels sector in New Zealand. This will include a focus on wood-based products that will provide a large source of residues.

However, is the forestry sector in a position to supply?

The potential right now is immense - and it’s growing as the wood harvest increases. Biofuel is a new product line for the forestry sector. So, how can the forestry and wood processing sector best capitalise on this opportunity?

What's Planned?
  1. A conference, exhibitions and practical workshops, run over two days, with a wide range of industry leaders and experts.
  2. For NZ forest owners, harvesting and wood transport contractors, sawmills and wood manufacturing operations who are looking at ways to better understand the opportunities open to them in emerging bio-energy markets.
  3. An event enabling the industry to better understand the real value of wood fibre – or residues – and the opportunities open to it in supplying this product to the market.

This half-day workshop will focus on what makes wood fuel different from forest residues and how forest growers and contractors can turn residues, which would otherwise be wasted, into revenue.

With the increased demand for wood fuel for new heat plant being installed, or for cofiring in existing coal plant, it is important that contract compliant fuel is processed and delivered. Generally, the residues sourced from forest or processing plant require treatment to make them contract compliant fuel.

This workshop will outline how wood fuel is specified and discuss methods for verification of compliance to specification. Fuel supplier quality assurance systems ensure that contracts are successfully performed. The workshop will be presented by the Bioenergy Association. Attendees will receive free copies of the Wood Fuel Supply Technical Guides.

Registration: Workshop bookings are make when registering for the Conference.
